The reviews I've read, do usually acknowledge that while they "are a compromise of both a lathe and a mill," that they "are surprisingly rigid and capable", So I think the 3-in-1 satisfies #2 and #3. The smithy in particular satisfies #4 very well. I'm taking #5 for granted.

I would rather get a small mill that is mounted on a stand/table and put a lathe under it. Yeah, working on a lathe that is sitting on the ground would be a pain in the @$$, but it would still beat a 3-in-1 machine.
